Radio Jnet: Upper Trash

Ok, I cannot let last weeks completely bizarro events go without some comment - what the heck is wrong with people!?! Last weeks news and tabloids were full of baby mama dramas, family fun with a fireplace poker and gun, and a new spin on wearing diapers that has apparently riveted the whole country...

What, was it national celebrity breakdown week or something?

And what ever happened to journalism? Them facts is whack.

So, I will begin with the death of Anna Nicole Smith (plus 50 surnames) - rest in peace. Clearly this is a woman with a life full of issues, she is a proverbial train wreck and many have stopped to watch the fiery crash. Yet, all I feel is sad when I think of it, the whole entire thing is just sad. I hope for that little babies sake, that Stern really is the father - that it is proven immediately, that he really did love her mother and that he will step up to take good care of her as she grows up - because no matter how many millions she does or doesn't end up with, it can't possibly make up for the history she has inherited through no fault of her own. The media and the world has chewed joyfully on Anna's every heartache since her son passed away, I find it atrocious, petty, one of the ugliest sides of our culture. I am not even going to start on the wanna be daddies in this story, except to say that unless each of them truly has reason to suspect the right to claim this child, they really are low-life's, regardless of money, title or stature.

Next, I move on the O'Neils - ummmm they have to be like the scary neighbors of mailbu at this point right? Is there anyone who doesn't know that this whole family has issues? Is there anyone who doesn't know that every family has issues, some uglier and more violent than others? Why would anyone care? Wish them all some counseling and move on. The one thing I will say about it, is that for all the smut they are peddling out there about this, I have yet to see anyone note the thing I found the most disconcerting about all of this - how Griffens pregnant girlfriend is not only 20 years his junior which is bordering on creepy enough for me personally BUT that she looks so disturbingly like his sister Tatum, at least in every picture I have seen of her so far.

And last but not least, that poor astronaut. The sensationalism and highlighting of the most trivial but gossip worthy facts of this story are truly appalling. Here is a woman who has dedicated her life to the military and our national space program. She suffered a traumatic loss of 3 of her classmates in a shuttle explosion, she has been going through a divorce and oh hey by the way, she is human, she might have made a few mistakes too. Again, who cares, why are they crucifying this woman in the media? Wait, because she wore diapers so she wouldn't have to stop her halfway across country journey to either talk to, kidnap or kill a rival for the affections of a man she was in love with? Yup, sounds a bit goofy, but slightly less so when you consider astronauts wear diapers on missions, so its fairly standard for them - not out of the realm of normalcy...a lot of men I know pee in bottles on road trips so they don't have to stop, kind of gross, but no ones freaking out about them...Office romances, love triangles, breakdowns of professionals in high stress jobs - pretty common stuff...

If they can make all this so exciting and profitable, too bad they can't do the same for things we can actually do something about, that are urgently important...you know, things like global warming - avoiding drought, famine and unrecoverable natural disasters; or genocide, or here's a worthy one - the over 3000 soldiers who have died Iraq;n or maybe homeless and starving children...just a thought....
