Went to the Santa Barbara Bowl Friday night to see The Pretenders & The Stray Cats in concert. There was another band that opened, but I didn't see them and can't recall the name. The show was great, both Brian Setzer and Chrissie Hynde were inspirational with non-stop energy, solid vocals and truly rockin' guitars. I hope I look that fabulous in knee high boots at 57 years old. No, seriously! It also made me very curious to research other songs she has written, she has a very interesting songwriting style that appeals to me.
I am really grateful because it wasn't a concert I probably would have gone to on my own, I was invited and I wasn't even all that excited about it at first. I have always loved the Stray Cats, but I had forgotten how much I like the Pretenders, and did not realize how much I would just enjoy the music that I didn't know or remember. When Brian jumped on stage with the Pretenders, I could feel the electricity in the air, they play well together and had a good natural musical rapport. Thanks Tia, I really did have so much fun!
Things I learned about the Bowl are:
get stadium seat cushions: stadium benches hurt after a while and you can't just stand up and dance the entire show or the people behind you get a little testy
parking sucks, get there early
hotel rooms are hard to come by this time of year - book early
the glasses of wine are HUGE for a concert venue - nice bonus
prepare to meet your seat neighbors, they pack you in very tight on the stadium benches - Bunny who sat next to me was a lovely, slightly chatty woman, that I found just a bit overwhelming - though she was very nice and in fairness I am sure sitting down in between a bunch of strangers who are clearly there together, when you are by yourself - is a bit daunting.
